Few things are as important to sound biblical Christianity as correctly answering the question: Is Jesus God?
Depending on who you ask this question to, you’re likely to get a myriad of answers. Mormons say one thing and the Jehovah Witnesses say another thing. Muslims believe one thing and some Protestants believe another.
But what does the Bible have to say about it?
The Bible is very clear, direct, and consistent when answering the “Is Jesus God?” question, and the Bible’s answer is…
Absolutely, yes!
3 Bible Passages That Answer ‘Is Jesus God?’
I don’t plan for this article to be anything close to an exhaustive verse study on the deity of Jesus Christ. In fact, my plan is that at the end of the article you’ll see how the gospel itself PROVES the deity of Jesus Christ.
But let me give you a few Bible verses that answer the “Is Jesus God?” question, nevertheless.
Hebrews 1:1-8 says the following:
“Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”? Or again, “I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son”? And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship him.” Of the angels he says, “He makes his angels winds, and his ministers a flame of fire.” But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom…”
Colossians 1:15-20 says this,
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.”
John 1:1-3, 14 says this,
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
The Gospel Itself Answers ‘Is Jesus God?’
QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER ABOUT THE GOSPEL:
- In the Old Testament, before Jesus was ever born, how did people get saved?
- What did a person in the Old Testament have to do in order to get to heaven?
- Did God have a different “plan of salvation” in the Old Testament, and a new “plan of salvation” in the New Testament?
FIRST… In the Old Testament, people got saved by believing in God alone. Our works, efforts, and actions have never…no, never!…been the means of obtaining, achieving, or even sustaining our salvation.
God has always saved people in one way–by his grace alone!
People do not earn their salvation by works or deeds. Faith in God (and that faith alone) is what saves people.
If I can put it this way: Your faith in God, or your unbelief in God, will solely determine the “geography” (Heaven or Hell) of your eternity. Your actions/works/deeds performed in this life will solely determine the “quality” (Rewards in Heaven or Punishment in Hell) of your eternity.
So, in the Old Testament, before Jesus was ever born, people were saved by God by believing in God alone.
It Genesis 15:6, of Abraham’s righteousness, it says the following:
“Then he [Abraham] believed in the LORD; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness.”
SECOND… As already stated above, in the Old Testament, a person believed in God in order to get to heaven. It is faith and faith alone that leads to salvation.
THIRD… Did God have a different “plan of salvation” in the Old Testament versus the New Testament.
Answer? No!
Is Jesus God? (Here comes the answer!)
God never changes, and his plan of salvation has never changed, either.
People in the Old Testament era were saved by his grace alone when they believed in him alone.
People in the New Testament ear are saved by his grace alone when they believe in him alone.
In the New Testament era (such as today), how are people saved? By believing in Jesus alone!
In Acts 4:12, it says this about Jesus Christ,
“And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
When you believe in Jesus, you are believing in God!
Is Jesus God? Yes, most definitely, and without question!
God is not an idolater and he will not suffer competition in his plan of salvation. Salvation is by and through and of him alone. And Jesus is God!
The people in the Old Testament era were saved when they believed in God. The people in the New Testament era are saved when they believe in God. Period!
Jesus is God. Jesus is fully God and fully man. He is 100% God and he is 100% man.
A Different Gospel?
Please notice, that if you say (or anyone else comes to your house on a Saturday morning and says) that Jesus is not God, then you have created a different gospel, which is no gospel at all. And that is heresy, blasphemy, and the stuff of devils.
Beloved, don’t ever question the deity of Jesus Christ. The very gospel itself hinges on this important truth!

I agree! Now, my next question is this; Did Jesus tell us that we too were just like him?
Is that the subject of your next posting? Thanks for this posting, I enjoyed it.

Hey Diane! No, I haven’t decided what my next article topic will be. But what, exactly, do you mean by “Did Jesus tell us that we too were just like him?”?
Pamela Lipscomb - Spiritual Gifts Today says
This is a great message that clarify s a lot of confusion. As a young born again believers (70’s lingo) we always prayed to Jesus and praised Jesus. I began to feel bad for God, because it seemed, he wasn’t getting equal time! I came to understand that Jesus is God, He is God manifested in the flesh.
John 1:1 In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God…..v. 1 4And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Thanks for making this clear in your post!

Pamela, thanks so much for sharing! That’s very encouraging to me. I’m excited that the Lord has been leading you down the path of understanding. To God be the glory!
