Everyone follows somebody, and most people follow multiple people. The real question you need to ask and answer for yourself is this:
Is anyone following me?
Michael Hyatt has a tribe. Chris Brogan has a tribe, too. So do Ron Edmondson, Jeff Goins, John Maxwell, and Kimanzi Constable. Apple has a tribe and so does Twitter. Sushi restaurants have their tribes and so do reality TV stars, widget manufacturers, skateboarders, politicians, and even little ‘ole me. Almost everyone alive has a tribe of their own.
The beauty of it all is that I’m a member of all these tribes. I subscribe to their art and follow their blogs. When they speak, I listen. I follow some more than others but I certainly follow them all to one degree or another. And maybe you do, too.
Tribes: The Art Of Leading People Who Want To Follow You
The remarkable Seth Godin wrote a best-selling book called Tribes. The book is both short and incalculable in its value. The premise of the book is that people want to follow other people (leaders) and we need ways to connect with each other. He defined what a tribe is with the following:
“A tribe is a group of people connected to one another, connected to a leader, and connected to an idea.”
Notice that tribes are:
- Connected to one another
- Connected to a leader
- Connected to an idea
You need all three to have a tribe, and the better you (the leader) communicate with your followers, the healthier—and larger—your tribe will become. It truly is a very simple concept. The challenge is in finding the people who want to be active in tribes, such as your tribe.
Every leader has a tribe…or even tribes (as in more than one). As you build your platform through speaking, social media, your website, your books, you are gathering followers. You are building your tribe.
How can you develop your tribes and, therefore, become a more influential leader? The following articles will help you answer that question for yourself. If you have any questions or comments, contact me. Enjoy!
