ATTENTION MOTHERS: Your labor of love for your children is worth it. You’re doing a great work!
All godly mothers want their children to grow up loving the Lord, to walk in his ways, and to be blessed by God. Proverbs 3:1-6 is a passage of Scripture which outlines exactly how to make a mother’s prayer for her child become reality.
A Mother’s Prayer for Her Child
Here are six things, from Proverbs 3:1-6, that a godly mother can do to help ensure that her child lives righteously and is blessed by the Lord.
1. A godly mother desires for her child to obey God’s commands from the heart.
God doesn’t judge based upon the external appearance of behavior, but by the person’s heart, and so a godly mother desires the things of God to be on the inner heart of her beloved child.
My son, do not forget my law, but let your heart keep my commands” (Proverbs 3:1)
2. A godly mother knows and teaches her child that following God’s ways is the true path of a long and fulfilled life.
We reap what we sow. If we sow to the flesh we’ll reap corruption. If we sow to the Spirit we reap the blessings of God.
For length of days and long life and peace they will add to you.” (Proverbs 3:2)
3. A godly mother is well-aware of the sinful tendencies of her child, and so she reminds her child to keep God and his Word very close by.
When Adam and Eve were sinless, they only knew good. When they ate of the forbidden fruit, they learned evil. From that moment forward they knew both good and evil. Therefore, godly mothers must remind their children to resist evil and cling to what is good, which God himself is altogether good.
Let not mercy and truth forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart” (Proverbs 3:3)
4. Along with the warning to always keep God close by, a godly mother reminds her child of the blessings and rewards that surely follow holy living.
God is a righteous Father who gives good things to his children. But he will also chasten us if we go astray. To live righteously in this world brings the blessings of reputation, both with our fellow man and with our omnipotent Maker.
And so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man.” (Proverbs 3:4)
5. A godly mother reminds her child that loving God is more than external actions; it is also trusting in God’s ways when the child has lost his or her way.
When life’s difficulties arise, too often we trust in our own experience, our own skills, talents and ingenuities, rather than trusting in God alone. Remind your child to not fall into that trap!
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5)
6. A godly mother reminds her child that God will smooth out the rough patches of life if the child is willing to ask God in every circumstance.
Life throws a lot of curve balls at our heads. One after another, and usually when we’re not ready. Life can be hard sometimes, if not most of the time. But God has the desire to smooth out the rough patches of our lives when we are holy reliant upon him. A godly mother reminds her children of this wonderful truth!
In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:6)

I believe these six points of Proverbs 3:1-6 are a mother’s prayer for her children. Pray for your children, instruct them in the things of God, and lead them down the path they should go.
