There are some books you pick up for the first time and just hate to have to put it down. But there are also others you put down and hope you never have to pick up again. Our Last Great Hope is a book that fits into both these categories and, as far as I’m concerned, that’s a very good thing.
Authored by Ronnie Floyd and published by Thomas Nelson, Our Last Great Hope is a book I thoroughly enjoyed and strongly recommend. Yet it was also one in which I was somewhat hesitant to reach for each new morning as I sat down to read. I was captivated by Floyd’s writing style and his magnificent handling of the topic (The Great Commission), but I also got the uncomfortable feeling that he wrote the book with me, specifically, in mind.
I feasted on the content, yet with the turning of every page I wanted to slam it shut, send Mr. Floyd a stern email and demand a public apology. I mean, didn’t he know that his book would so resonant and hit home with tens of thousands of floundering American Christians?
Yes, I think Mr. Floyd knew precisely what he was doing.
Endorsed by such people as Ed Stetzer, James MacDonald, Bruce Wilkinson, Ed Young, and Albert Mohler, this 222-page book is a true page-turner. Subtitled Awakening The Great Commission, Floyd describes his own church’s journey of trying to figure out what The Great Commission meant for them individually, locally and internationally. He provides sound illustrations and real-life examples about how they did just that, and the reader will walk away from each chapter wanting more and more and more.
Our Last Great Hope is not just another book ringing the same old bell about why the church needs to get more involved in fulfilling The Great Commission. Not all all. Floyd provides practical experience along with helpful hints and activities that local churches (and individual Christians, for that matter) might consider utilizing in their attempts to obey Christ’s final instructions. He even goes so far as to drive the point home that, when used appropriately, contemporary technology can be a tremendous tool for reaching large numbers of people globally; people we will likely never meet in this life and for whom we could never reach otherwise through our grassroots efforts.
Do I recommend that you purchase Our Last Great Hope and begin the journey of being awakened about our Lord’s Great Commission? Yes—but only if you’re willing to do some serious soul-searching and personal repentance. Will you be glad you read it once you turn the final page? All I know is that I was, and I trust you will as well.
