It is true. Very true. Most Christians—myself included—sweat bullets when they think about talking to strangers (not to mention friends & family) about their Christian faith.
It causes the sweat to pour and the blood pressure to rise. Reasons not to speak the truth in love begin to surface all around us. (“Oh, they won’t be interested in hearing what I have to say”…or…”They look busy. Maybe I’ll try later”…or my personal favorite to use…”If they mention something about religion first, only then I will say anything.”)
Ever been there? I certainly have. Actually, I’m there right now.
Later this afternoon some fellow brothers in Christ that I know will be meeting in downtown Fresno for some open-air preaching and one-to-one witnessing. Evangelism is certainly an exciting ministry, to be sure. But as usual…I’m pretty nervous. It must have been for this very reason that Jesus sent out His disciples into the surrounding cities in pairs. After all, there is much encouragement when ministering alongside a friend.
Consider the following verses regarding “ministry” in groups:
- “Where there is no guidance the people fall, but in abundance of counselors there is victory” (Proverbs 11:14).
- “Without consultation, plans are frustrated, but with many counselors they succeed” (Proverbs 15:22).
- “For by wise guidance you will wage war, and in abundance of counselors there is victory” (Proverbs 24:6).
Think of it this way: Ministry is like riding a bicycle for the first time without training wheels. Everyone stumbles and falls in the beginning. It’s not about whether you ever fell off your bicycle, but if you had the courage to get back on and try again!
If you have ever been nervous when ministering to non-Christians (or even fellow believers), please leave a comment below. I would love to hear how you struggled with, succumbed to, managed, and even overcame your fears.

Thank you. Lord willing it will teach and encourage!
